The Science learning area includes the three strands of Science Understanding, Science as a Human Endeavour and Science Inquiry Skills. These are interrelated and their content is taught in an integrated way. Four areas of Science Understanding are focused on over the course of the year: Earth and Space Science, Physical Science, Chemical Science and Biological Science.
Science at Dalmain Primary school continues to be a key priority area. The Science program is taught to students from Pre-primary to Year 6 for one hour and twenty minutes each week. The Inquiry based program focuses on developing students Science understanding and Inquiry Skills through collaborative, hands-on activities and investigations. A key area of development is improving Scientific vocabulary of our students. This is introduced to students using the Talk for Writing strategies of actions
and pictures, as utilised for writing in junior classrooms. The cross curricular priorities of Sustainability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures and Australia’s links to Asia are integrated into the program. In addition, to provide real world learning and problem-solving opportunities, STEM projects are a part of the program. Technology is often used to engage students and incursions arranged, to further enrich the learning.
